WhatsApp Business app vs WhatsApp Business API vs coexistence: which one you need
Three products carry the WhatsApp Business name and they are often confused. This page separates them by what you can do, what it costs and what you give up.
1. WhatsApp Business app
The free app from the store. One number, one phone (plus linked devices for up to four more logins), a catalog, labels, quick replies, away messages. Everything is manual: a human reads and types. There is no API, no webhook and no way for a CRM to see the chats. It is the right tool for the first year of a business and for many businesses forever.
2. WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API)
Meta's hosted API. The number is registered to a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA), messages arrive at a webhook, you send through HTTPS calls, and approved templates let you message customers outside the 24-hour service window. Multiple agents, automation, chatbots, AI, analytics, all possible. Traditionally the number could not also be on the app: registering it on the API removed it from the phone.
Cost has two parts. Meta charges per delivered business-initiated message by category (marketing, utility, authentication) with free replies inside the 24-hour service window; the rate card is per country. On top of that, whoever gives you the API access (a Business Solution Provider or a technology provider) charges a platform fee, which is where most of the price differences between vendors live.
3. Coexistence
The app and the API on the same number. The owner keeps the app; your software gets the webhook and the send API. Chat history can be imported. Group chats stay app-only. Templates and the 24-hour rule apply to API sends exactly as on a normal Cloud API number. For a detailed description see what is WhatsApp coexistence.

How to choose
- Stay on the app if one person handles all chats and no system needs to see them.
- Go API-only for a new number, a notifications sender, or a contact centre where nobody will ever hold the phone.
- Choose coexistence when the number already has customers on it, the owner wants to keep replying, and you also want a CRM, Tally, a dashboard or an AI assistant on the same conversations.
NumberBridge supports the last two: coexistence for existing app numbers and API-only registration for new ones, from the same dashboard and the same webhook.
